DJ fashion

Three top female DJs on their striking signature styles.

Leigh Lezark, 26, is one third of the New York DJ trio the Misshapes, who play new wave, electro and party tunes. She is the current face of DKNY Jeans and a brand ambassador for Chanel

I started DJing at 17 because I was so young-looking and it was the only way I could get into clubs.

My hairstyle became famous, but it's not as if I landed in New York from New Jersey and thought, 'I know, I'll get a trademark haircut and become a DJ!' One night I was out partying with the fashion designer Benjamin Cho. It was three in the morning and I decided I wanted an asymmetric bob, so he grabbed some scissors.

I am relatively short at 5ft 6in, so I avoid long skirts. I like them practically up round my waist; the shorter, the better. I dress to suit the event. Last night I played at a Sotheby's cocktail party and wore a beautiful, feathered minidress by Zac Posen. Today I'm wearing Kenzo. I love the intricate beading; it weighs a ton. I love heels by Nicholas Kirkwood. His shoes are always tall and fierce, perfect for fashion parties, although the shoes that have seen me through the craziest parties are by Costume National. I have had them reheeled so many times.

I have a really good relationship with Karl Lagerfeld. We have a mutual love of Diet Coke. My most treasured possessions are some Chanel 'gun' shoes he gave me. I was seriously worried that they would get confiscated when I took them on the plane. He also gave me some 'light-bulb' shoes that light up when you walk. I have built a special shelf in my house for them.

Girls blog about what I wear. It's really flattering but I never read what they write - it would send me crazy. I did see some people dressed up as me on Hallowe'en, though. That was pretty cool.

Chesca, 30, plays early-1980s boogie and disco

I take inspiration for my outfits off the covers of the records I play. The Italo-disco star Spanga is a big influence. So are the members of Prince's girl band, Vanity 6, who wore amazing leotards. Leotards are perfect for performing - they make me feel powerful, like Superwoman.

Most of my clothes are vintage. I love orthodox Jewish hats and I change my hair all the time. Right now I have an undercut and long hair, with mismatched extensions. I love London style. You can wear what you want and no one cares.

Goldierocks 26, plays electro-house. She presents Boom TV on 4 Music and the Selector radio show for the British Council

DJing is an exchange of energy between you and the audience. Clothes can enhance that but they also need to be practical. My performances are very physical - I climb on to the speakers and crowd surf - so I have to consider that when I'm getting ready. You don't want to end the set with one shoe on and a ripped dress.

Girl DJs need something to set them apart. My hair is long down to my waist - it's my trademark. A typical outfit is biker boots from Urban Outfitters, my bespoke hoodie that Puma made for me with Goldierocks on the back, Yves Saint Laurent cocktail rings, a sequin dress from French Connection and my personalised gold headphones from Audio Chi.

Right now I'm into wearing feathers because I like the texture and movement. I have a black feather cape from Topshop Unique, which is perfect because it's short enough for me to be able to move my arms. But I love a little black dress, too.

Every job is different. This summer I played on Giorgio Armani's yacht in Monaco. I wore a Moschino dress. At the other end of the scale is my radio show for the British Council. The great thing about radio is you can roll in with knotty hair and a weird-smelling boyfriend jumper and no one will ever know.

Is It Too Late To Invest in Gold?

If you have been paying attention to financial news lately, you’ll have noticed that the price of gold has been rising. In fact, gold has tripled in value over the last seven years, outperforming the S&P 500 for this same period of time.

But can it continue?

According to many experts, the answer is a resounding – yes!

Many analysts argue that the global economy is in the midst of a long-term cycle of rising commodity prices that started in 2001. In inflationary times as well as times of uncertainty, the price of gold tends to rise. In addition, over the past few years, the world's central banks have been flooding the market with liquidity. Historically, this has lead to devaluation in currency and a relative rise in the value of gold, as it’s one of the only "currencies" they can't just print.

Many of these same analysts think global conditions today could lead to another gold boom similar to what we experienced in the 1970s. Today, government central banks, led by China and India, are again net purchasers of gold*. According to an internal client report from Citibank in November 2008, signs from China indicate their central bank may be intending to boost its gold reserves from 600 tons to as much as 4,000 tons to diversify away from paper currencies and that could help push the price of gold above $2000 an ounce in 2011**

If you want to invest in gold, how to go about it

One of the easiest and most popular ways to buy gold is to invest in bullion coins whose value is usually closely tied to the daily published price of gold on the world market. Another popular method is to buy historic or mint gold coins that, due to their collectable nature, have a value greater than their pure precious metal content. Both strategies are valid for investment, with the latter providing additional features and benefits.

If you are interested in learning more about diversifying your portfolio, or starting or completing a coin collection, one of the best places to turn is Goldline International . With an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, this 50 year old company has demonstrated its commitment to reliability and trust in the market.

Goldline realized early on that customer service was a critical element for people interested in acquiring gold. Today they sell over 500 million dollars per year of rare and collectible numismatic coins and gold, silver, and platinum coins and bars to collectors and investors.

Perhaps one reason for their success is that they have developed some very special customer service programs for their clients. They offer secure delivery or can arrange third party storage of your precious metals. They also have a wide variety of payment options as well as a price guarantee program on select coins and a satisfaction guarantee that gives first-time buyers in most coin transactions a full seven-day money-back guarantee (limits and different refund periods may apply).

Goldline can even assist you in adding precious metals to your IRA.

While nobody can predict the exact movement of gold, and, like any investment, investing in gold does have risks, many experts agree that gold should be considered as part of a diversified portfolio. Goldline recommends no more than 5-20% of your investment dollars should be in precious metals.

And Goldline is the company that thousands of satisfied clients choose to acquire gold with confidence.

UGG Classic Cardy In Short Supply

It’s only 10 months since the UGG Classic Cardy took UGG lovers by storm, On it’s release in November last year it only took a couple of weeks to sell out completely. In the past 3 weeks we’ve seen a dramatic increase in enquiries and searches and once again many retailers have sold out. It seems that many buyers have ensured that they don’t miss out this year.

As with last year It seems that your best hope for finding a pair will be with eBay. Although retailers have plenty of time to get more stocks in the shops before christmas, if they are available. Last year we saw pairs sell on eBay for upwards of $400 so it may be an idea to get in early this year before the laws of supply and demand kick in. In fact sooner rather than later should be your moto. I myself managed to purchase a pairof these in cream only a couple of weeks ago for just over $50 on eBay. The reason they were so cheap was the seller was trying to get rid of stock in order to get in the new ranges including the Classic Argyle Knit boots that Ugg have introduced this year.

The Classic Cardy continues on the successful knit style boot that appeared with the Classic crochetrange. At this moment in time the classic crochet is still available. The Classic Cardy is available with colorful knit uppers in Black, Grey Oatmeal and dusty Rose. So finding a colour to match a particular outfit inyour wardrobe shouldn’t prove that much of a challenge.

The inner contains a sheepskin sockliner for extra comfort. A light and flexible outsole along with a suede heel guard provides durable wear all season long.

Perhaps the most striking detail on the Classic Cardy is the 3 large wood buttons which allows a whole range of different looks and styles. It is this design feature that allows you to wear them in a number of different ways. Yes you can wear them pulled up to their full height or you have the option to undo the buttons and then create the slouched look which is a hot look for boots this year. The other way in which they can be worn is by rolling them down in much the same way you would roll sleeves of your sweater up.

Due to the way in which these boots can be worn they can be teamed with just about any item of clothing in your wardrobe. Don’t just wear them with your jeans instead why not team up a pair of Ugg Classic Cardy boots with a wool dress and opaque tights in colours that complement.

Times They Are A Changin’

Out here in California, there’s a proposition we’ll be voting for next week that aims to legalize marijuana. Chances are it will fail because, let’s face it, most pot heads are too lazy to vote. Nevertheless, it is kind of interesting to see the tide turn on drug legalization, as exemplified by this pro-weed commercial. To think it was only a few years ago that the government was releasing scare-tactic ads that suggested buying pot was funding terrorism. How far we’ve come…

Audrina’s Mom is Drunk, Amazing

Reality starlet Audrina Patridge got voted off Dancing with the Stars last night; so what’s a mother to do? How about get drunk on Hollywood Boulevard and give the paps a piece of her mind? That’s exactly what Audy’s mom did, and in this hilarious video, the woman (who looks strikingly like her daughter) unleashes her wrath at American, Lauren Conrad, and pretty much anyone else she’s felt has wronged her daughter. Good times indeed…

REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS PHOTOCAP: Chocolate and Silicone

Sorry I’m a bit behind on my Real Housewives of Beverly Hills coverage. Fear not: it’s not a reflection of my feelings towards them because I can assure you that I love them dearly. This installment in the franchise has been nothing but hilarious so far, which is no real surprise: I mean, the show follows half a dozen women with faces so tight their skin probably squeezes their brains into tiny, crescent-shaped masses. No wonder they’re all a bit insane. For the record, I’m convinced that my brain is a tiny, crescent-shaped mass, and I haven’t even had cosmetic surgery. The good news is that several of these ladies are eminently likable (Lisa, e.g.) or at least affable (Taylor, e.g.). The Richards sisters, of course, are out of their minds, but that should be no shock to anyone who has a vague knowledge of how child actors turn out — especially when they have nieces who are considerably more famous than they are. And then we have Adrienne Maloof, who looks like she chews up and shits out ten men a day. That includes her simian husband who spent much of last week’s episode trailing around his wife like a lost puppy-dog (assuming that puppy-dog had undergone a face-lift or two. Male plastic surgery = not good).

Anyway, I must admit that I was drunk when I watched the latest episode; so my memory of it is vague: the sisters fought, Paul clung on to Adrienne, the sisters fought some more, Lisa bought a chocolate bunny, Taylor tried on clothes for some reason, the sisters fought some more, Camille met with a gay, Taylor met with Brody Jenner’s mom, Brody Jenner’s mom said something about Africa, Taylor smiled at Brody Jenner’s mom, and finally, the sisters fought. That pretty much covers it, right? Photocap after the jump…

What did you think about the episode?

COCKTAIL OF THE WEEK: Jack-O-Lantern Edition

With Halloween right around the corner, I thought it only fitting that this week’s Cocktail of the Week by fitting with the season. Enter Three Olives vodka, who graciously supplied me with a bottle of their Rangtang flavored vodka as well as a nifty recipe for something called “The Jack-O-Lantern.” How could I resist?

After the jump, check out the Jack-O-Lantern and see if this drink was a trick or a treat…

(Sorry, that was lame)

The Verdict: Super good! I didn’t really know what to expect from this drink (aside from lots of orange flavor), but I can assure you the end result is quite tasty. In fact, it’s kind of hilarious that this benign drink is called “The Jack-O-Lantern” as it is hardly spooky (nor imbued with pumpkin flavors). The best way to describe the flavor is a melted orange popsicle. That’s a good thing.

Be sure to add this to your Halloween repertoire. Thanks for the booze and the recipe, Three Olives!
